Gift Watches and How to Pick Them

Do you know someone who is retiring or graduating? Are they interested in watches or luxury items? Gift watches are the thing to give someone who can appreciate value as well as the significance of the watch. The next time you have an occasion to give a gift, you might want to consider giving out a watch. Watches are more than just timepieces; they are a reflection of the person you give them to.

Watches tell a story of time and the person that owns them. When you consider picking up a watch for someone as a gift, you have to consider more than simply what looks nice. You need to account for many factors about the person you’re buying it for and what you want to say with the watch you buy them. Let’s take a look at some of the things you will want to do when you go to buy a watch as a gift.

Quite often buying a watch is all about the look. Either the person will wear the watch daily, on special occasions or it will put up in a display case somewhere. This is one of the things you need to consider when you go to purchase a watch as a gift. A watch that someone will wear is going to be harder to pick than one that goes on display. You have to make sure that the person will look good in the design you buy. Buying a watch for a display doesn’t require as much time and effort especially if you buy the display for it.

Buying a watch for someone that you intend for them to wear is a very personal statement. Engagement rings come in many different cuts and the cut you buy says a lot to the person you’re buying it for. The same can be said about a watch you buy as a gift for someone else. You need to consider the color, design, maker, type and price. Giving a watch as a gift for a birthday or anniversary is much different than one you’d give for a lifetime achievement such as retirement.

Keep these tips in mind the next time you need to go shopping for gift watches. You will decrease the stress it puts on you when trying to pick the right watch and you’ll be sending the right message with the gift you give. The most important thing to remember is what the person you’re buying it for would want. When you know what that is you’ll be set to buying the perfect watch.

Mistakes to Avoid When Purchasing Watches

With so many watches to choose from these days, it might seem like having so many choices is a good thing. Having too many choices can be a bad thing. While you’re bound to find what you want eventually, it can be a tiresome process to get what you need. There are many common mistakes people make when they go to purchase a watch.

Avoiding these pitfalls can be as simple as taking a bit of time to prepare before you go out and just purchase something on a whim. The best thing to do before you buy a watch is to do research before you go out. You’ll also need to figure out what you need versus what you want. Just because a watch is expensive doesn’t make it the watch for you.

If you’re buying watch for yourself, this should be a lot easier than if you’re buying one for someone else. The two most important things to consider when you go to buy your watch are:

  1. What you need
  2. What you like

While it might seem simple to figure out the answer to these two questions, it isn’t always. There are many different types of watches you can choose from and because of this, some watches come with things you don’t actually need. If you don’t fly a lot or climb to high altitudes having a zero gravity watch won’t do you much good.

Another thing to consider is what you like. Do you prefer a digital watch or an analogue watch? The way your watch displays the time is very important as you’ll want to be able to quickly tell what time it is. Watches can also do more than simply tell you what time it is.

Many of today’s watches can give you the day of the week and month. Some have the ability to act as a stop watch. Many even come with an alarm clock so you can set it to beep at a specific time. If you want all of these functions you’ll have an easier time finding them on a digital watch. This doesn’t mean that analogue watches don’t have these features; they’re just not as common.

Buying watches for features is great but what about buying a watch because of the way it looks? This is where analogue watches trump digital ones. Most digital watches don’t have a very nice look to them. Also, having a nice looking watch with big numbers on the face just doesn’t appeal to people. The three standard hands of an analogue watch are much more appealing to those who are more about looks.

Choosing the right set of watches for you can be a complicated task. Many people prefer to have a watch for looks and a watch for everyday use. If you’re fortunate enough you’ll be able to find a watch for both situations. Just remember that when choosing a watch matching what you need with what you want is the most important thing.

Types of Watches

Watches have been around for hundreds of years and time has been fascinating man for even longer. The first watch was invented sometime in the 1500’s by Peter Henlein. The first sundials were believed to exist somewhere as early as 5000 BC. Without these great steps in history modern watches would not exist at all.

In today’s world we still have many of these early creations but most of them can only be viewed in museums. Watches now come in many different forms. While there are many different types of watches, almost every watch falls into one of two categories:

  • Analogue
  • Digital

Analog watches have three hands that rotate as time passes. Each hand has a specific purpose. One is for the hour, the next is for minutes and lastly the seconds hand is constantly moving. Digital watches don’t have hands but instead display three sets of numbers that use an LED display to show them.

These are the two types of display you’ll find when it comes to watches. These watches come in a variety of types though. Some of the most common types of watches are:

  • Water proof
  • Zero gravity
  • Quartz
  • Solar
  • Automatic

Each of these watches perform different functions. Water proof watches are exactly how they sound, they’re meant to go deep underwater. Zero gravity watches are made specifically to work in high altitude environments like space. Quartz and solar watches refer to the type of power they run on. Lastly automatic watches are mainly meant for analogue watches and it means they don’t have to be wound.

Pocket watches still exist today but are more of a novelty than a time piece. Most early watches, like pocket watches, were meant to be wound up. Eventually you’d lose minutes and even hours sometimes. This became a big inconvenience and thus the automatic watch was born. No longer did people have to manually wind up their watches.

Many analogue watches are also obsolete with the introduction of digital watches. No gears or springs are required and digital watches offer many more features than your standard watches. Almost all digital watches have a calendar, stop watch, alarm and large number display. Some analogue watches can give you the day of the month and time but not much more than that.

Watches will continue to change as time goes on and soon digital watches will also be the thing of the past. With so many types of watches you’ll be able to find something that suits your own needs. Maybe a simple time piece is all you need and the extra features would simply go to waste. Next time you go to buy a watch, consider what you really need in a time piece.
